As a leader and student working in the Chapel office of Abilene Christian University, I embarked on creating an animated whiteboard video to welcome Small Group Chapel leaders into a short module training course. This choice of asset was driven by the need to not only present information but also to captivate and engage the leaders effectively. The goal was to align with the ISTE Standard of Creative Communicator, where I sought to communicate complex ideas (what the short module course was about) clearly and creatively, utilizing digital media to suit the objectives of the project (ISTE, 2018).
Throughout the process, I encountered both struggles and successes. Learning the whiteboard animation software was a significant challenge that required time and patience. However, this challenge turned into a triumph as I overcame the learning curve and gained proficiency in using the software. This experience highlighted the importance of perseverance and dedication to acquire new skills. Despite the initial difficulties, I managed to create an engaging and informative animated video that I believe will effectively serve as an engaging welcome resource for Small Group Chapel leaders who will take the module. Again, there is still room for improvement since this was a try-and-error experience.
Through this study unit and creative experience, I have come to understand that being a Creative Communicator as a student and digital leader entails employing various platforms and tools to convey information in novel and captivating ways. In my context of leading Small Group Chapel leaders, being a Creative Communicator adds substantial value to the learning (training) process. It ensures that complex concepts are presented in ways that are both comprehensible and intriguing, fostering a deeper understanding and engagement among the leaders. I am planning to use this skill in my capstone project as well.
As a Digital Leader, being a Creative Communicator empowers me to provide a richer learning experience. Utilizing digital objects like animations, visualizations, or simulations, I can better cater to the diverse learning preferences of the leaders I work with. Moreover, this approach enables me to customize the message and medium for my intended audience, enhancing the effectiveness of my communication.
Through this experience, I have learned that being a Creative Communicator requires continuous effort and practice. It demands an extra mile of dedication to not only present content but to add value and engagement. This journey emphasized that effective communication of complex ideas demands patience and the adept use of suitable tools. As I continue my work as a Digital Leader, I recognize the significance of ongoing improvement in my creative communication skills, ultimately benefiting the leaders I serve and my future communication endeavors.
